about

Ichigo Ichie is a Japanese four-character idiom (yojijukugo) that describes a cultural concept of treasuring the unrepeatable nature of a moment. The term has been roughly translated as "for this time only," and "once in a lifetime."

“Ichigo Ichie” is unusual in both conception and execution. While the shakuhachi has a rich cultural tradition and is certainly no stranger to improvisation, it has seldom found an artist who plays it like Steve Cohn does. Steve’s concept embraces both the development of lines/ideas plus innovative sound-based creation. His use of extended techniques gives these short pieces flight. Similarly, Carl Baugher’s percussion work extends beyond the drum kit and includes percussive elements sometimes found in orchestral music. The coloristic combinations these two improvisers come up with are both organic and propulsive. In an extremely focused, brief album, Cohn and Baugher have delivered results often talked about but too seldom realized: something genuinely new. Even so, there’s a distinctly meditative quality to much of this music that listeners are likely to find relaxing. Ultimately, “Ichigo Ichie” proves adventurousness is not dependent on bombast.
