This album comes from a fruitful collaborative period when M&B were creating new music at a rather frenetic pace. During this time, sessions took place in a basement studio in Springfield, Illinois where John had an upright piano, drum kit and recording equipment ready for duty. I brought the old Kay WWII contrabass and we were off to the races. There was also a distinct element of emotional upheaval at work here having to do with our personal lives at the time. All these years later, it is quite evident that those strong emotions infused the music with a certain unique intensity. The photos by David Choisser used for the album cover were actually taken in a different location months after the sessions that yielded these recordings.

Sonically, given their age and provenance, the original tapes survived in good shape. They were, however, loaded with hiss and were transferred at relatively low levels. I have mastered this album to be listenable but it certainly does not sound like it was recently recorded. Let the listener judge.
