Improvising multi-instrumentalist Steve Cohn has been regarded as one of the most original voices on the piano for almost four decades. On "Wind Shape," his new quartet is loaded with both long-time collaborators like drummer Chuck Fertal as well as young, up-and-coming lions of the jazz world James Cook and Mike Harmon on alto saxophone/guitar and bass, respectively.

The music is expansive yet tightly interactive and the quartet shows unusually intuitive skills at listening to each other as each one builds off what the other creates while still maintaining a group identity throughout. The result is a coherent flow of ideas and expressions that is inspired, multi-dimensional and ceaselessly inventive.

This quartet features four highly talented musicians working at near the top of their potential. The ensuing music is energetic, thoughtful, exciting and ultimately satisfying.
